Lee H. Perlman, President, GNYHA Ventures, Inc.

Mr. Lee H. Perlman is President of GNYHA Ventures, Inc., a wholly owned, for-profit subsidiary of the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA). Over the past 25 years, Mr. Perlman has been responsible for the development of GNYHA Ventures’ business entities, which have grown to 5 companies serving more than 20,000 members across the healthcare continuum, as well as non-healthcare industries, in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. He is responsible for the growth of the subsidiaries’ new and innovative businesses involved in more than $10 billion in commerce.

 

These companies represent group purchasing, management outsourcing, healthcare consulting, and mobile health technology. In addition, Mr. Perlman is GNYHA’s Executive Vice President of Administration and is the Chief Financial Officer. One of the most innovative leaders in healthcare management and a national expert in healthcare procurement, Mr. Perlman currently serves as Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Healthcare Group Purchasing Industry Initiative (HGPII), the Public Policy Chair for the Health Industry Group Purchasing Association (HIGPA), and until recently served as a Director on the Board of Premier and as a member of Premier’s Audit Committee from 2005-2010. Mr. Perlman has used these national platforms to advocate for price transparency, comparative effectiveness in the supply chain, and adoption of mobile health technology to lower healthcare providers’ cost of doing business while maintaining greater resources for direct patient care.

 

Mr. Perlman has been a leader in promoting diversity in healthcare, serving on the Board of National Medical Fellowships. He also served on the Board of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management for 10 years, and founded GNYHA’s Summer Enrichment Program, where over 250 students from diverse backgrounds have been placed in summer internships with healthcare institutions. Board certified in healthcare management and an American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Fellow, Mr. Perlman served as an ACHE Board member from 2000-2004, and was an ACHE Regent from 1996-2000. He was the 1998 recipient of ACHE’s Robert S. Hudgens Memorial Award for Young Healthcare Executive of the Year. Mr. Perlman received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Binghamton (N.Y.) University and his Master’s degree in Business Administration from Cornell University, Sloan Program, Ithaca, NY. He served on the Binghamton University Alumni Association Board of Directors from 1994-2003. Volunteerism and Philanthropy Active in charity and non-profit work, Mr. Perlman is currently Treasurer of the Board for Musicians on Call, an organization that brings music to patients in healthcare facilities, and also serves on the Board of Directors of the New York Organ Donor Network, a nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organization. Mr. Perlman is also Co-Chair of the New York State Attorney General’s Leadership Committee for Nonprofit Revitalization. In addition, he has served on the Board of the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL), 1199 Pension and Benefit Fund, and FOJP Service Corporation.

 

An active volunteer for Northwestern University, Mr. Perlman serves as Class Chair for the NU Parents’ Fund and hosts an annual freshman “send-off” dinner for incoming students from the New York region and their families. Mr. Perlman recently joined the Board of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, and the Northwestern University and Hunter College local Hillel Boards. From 2000-2006, Mr. Perlman served as a member of the Board of Directors and Financial Vice President at Larchmont Temple and is the former Chairman of its Social Action Committee. He rejoined the Board in 2008 as Chair of the Larchmont Temple Youth Education Committee. Mr. Perlman is also former Chairman of the Shorefront Young Men’s-Young Women’s Hebrew Association of Brighton Beach in Brooklyn.

Christopher O’Connor, MBA, FACHE, President

Mr. Christopher J. O’Connor, MBA, FACHE has worked in the management consulting and healthcare industry for over two decades. He has held a variety of leadership positions over the course of his career and has built a reputation as an innovative and growth oriented thought leader. Mr. O’Connor has worked within the provider side of healthcare and at some of the top consulting firms across the globe.

Currently, Mr. O’Connor serves as Executive Vice President of GNYHA Ventures, Inc., the parent company for a number of for-profit businesses, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA). GNYHA is a one-of-a-kind trade association comprising nearly 250 hospitals and continuing care facilities, both voluntary and public, in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
and Puerto Rico.

Mr. O’Connor also serves as President of GNYHA Services, Inc., an acute care group purchasing organization. In his role as President, he is responsible for the management and growth of the GNYHA Services/Premier portfolio, Business Solutions Group, Business Strategy, Pharmacy, and Supply Chain Resources. Mr. O’Connor, along with his team, has been a critical component in client base expansion, strengthening, and growth. Under his tenure, the company’s profitability has grown from $16 million to over $45 million.

Mr. O’Connor is also President of Nexera, Inc., a healthcare consulting firm he created when he first joined GNYHA in 2003. Nexera’s initial focus was to assist hospitals and long term care facilities to identify and implement strategies to reduce supply chain cost through operational and strategic improvement. Today, the firm’s services have grown to include: organization wide process improvement and redesign, technology implementation assistance, contract evaluation, pharmacy and 340B tracking implementations, laboratory process, cost assessment and implementation, dietary assessment and management, and project and program management. Through Mr. O’Connor’s vision and leadership, Nexera’s impact on the healthcare community has been quite significant. Since its creation in 2003, Nexera has saved clients over $200 million and has achieved revenue and profitability goals every year.

In addition to his years at GNYHA, Mr. O’Connor has worked at KPMG (Bearing Point) and Deloitte. There he spent several years working internationally in Brazil, Holland, and South Africa on supply chain projects in financial services, manufacturing, and transportation. Once back in the U.S., Mr. O’Connor spent a year working with the United Nations and the then-budding Department of Homeland Security. Mr. O’Connor was appointed to the Document Security Advisory Council, United States Secret Service (2002-2003) while working with KPMG. He also successfully worked in the areas of cost reduction, M&A, reorganizations, strategy, system implementation (ERP), and technology optimization.

Mr. O'Connor is currently the Region 2 Board Representative for the Association for Healthcare Resources and Materials Management (AHRMM), Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), and former Chair of the Premier Purchasing Partners National Technology Steering Committee (2003-2010). He is a former Board Member of the Health Industry Group Purchasing Association (HIGPA) and a former member of the Editorial Board-Materials Management in Healthcare (1998-2000). In addition, Mr. O’Connor was previously elected to both the Iona College Alumni Board (1996-2004) and the Pelham, New York Board of Education (2001-2004).

Mr. O’Connor is an active speaker and author on a variety of healthcare, leadership, and supply chain topics. Since 1993, he has served as an adjunct instructor at Iona College teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Interpersonal Communication, Management, and English. In addition, he has guest lectured on the topics of Leadership, Career Management and Executive Perspectives within the Healthcare Programs. He is also a guest lecturer on supply chain management at Cornell University.

Throughout his career, Mr. O’Connor has given back to his personal and professional communities. Mr. O’Connor volunteers on the Advisory Board of the American Red Cross Metro New York and is a former Board Member of both the Mount Vernon YMCA Family Center and the Danny Fund, an organization providing financial assistance to families of children with cancer. Mr. O’Connor is also a trustee of Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester, NY.

Mr. O’Connor received his Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Iona College. He also has a Masters of Business Administration in Production Operation Management and a Post Masters Certificate in Management from Iona College’s Hagan School of Business.

Alison B. Flynn, Senior Vice President, Operations

Ms. Alison B. Flynn is Senior Vice President of Operations for Nexera. She oversees and supports the company’s internal operations.

 

Ms. Flynn is a proven leader who has worked in the healthcare and management consulting industries in various leadership capacities for over 20 years. She has corporate, provider, international management consulting, and educational experience backed by a commitment to improving the operations, productivity, quality, revenue growth, and cost-effectiveness of the institutions she works with. Previously, Ms. Flynn worked at Giuliani Partners, the consulting company of the former Mayor of New York City, Rudolph W. Giuliani, where she led the healthcare and pharmaceutical practice in addition to other engagements within the energy, finance, and fraud detection arenas. Ms. Flynn has also held administration, operations, and supply chain positions at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital /Weill Cornell Medical Center, Continuum Health Partners, and Danbury Hospital.

 

She holds a BS in Healthcare Administration and an MS in Health Services Administration from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. Ms. Flynn is an Adjunct Professor and Guest Lecturer for the Healthcare Management and Business programs at Iona College’s Hagan School of Business. She has lectured on leadership, team building, and supply chain management throughout her career. She also serves on the Healthcare Management Professional Advisory Board at Iona College, the American Red Cross of Greater New York - Harriman Advisory Board, and the Healthcare Leaders of New York Board, and is a volunteer with New York Needs You.

Nancy Vetter, Senior Vice President, Consulting

Ms. Nancy Vetter is Senior Vice President, Consulting, for Nexera. She is responsible for practice leadership and client service for Nexera’s healthcare-related strategy, cost reduction, process improvement, revenue enhancement, information technology program, and project management initiatives in healthcare facilities throughout the U.S. and world.

 

Ms. Vetter has more than 25 years of healthcare experience, working in both the hospital and consulting environment. During her tenure at BearingPoint, Inc. (formerly KPMG Consulting), Ms. Vetter was responsible for large scale cost reduction efforts. In her role, she helped hospitals achieve significant savings through clinical, financial, and operational improvement efforts. Ms. Vetter also worked for a large health system in New York City where she was responsible for conducting enterprise-wide operational assessments and developing and deploying improvement plans focused on revenue enhancement and cost reduction. Additionally, Ms. Vetter worked as a critical care nurse for over 10 years.

Ms. Vetter earned her Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the City University of New York, Baruch College and her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the City University of New York, Hunter College. She is also a PMI-Certified Project Management Professional.

Victoria Miller, MBA, FACHE, Senior Vice President, Management Services

Ms. Victoria Miller is Senior Vice President, Management Services for Nexera. She oversees practice leadership and client services for the division.

Ms. Miller has an extensive background managing end-to-end supply chain operations including strategic sourcing and contracting, logistics, inventory management clinical engineering and value analysis. Working with a physician-led value analysis team at an IDN, she and her team delivered over $18 million in savings in 9 months. Her expertise in physician preference item management includes leading a successful physician gainsharing engagement resulting in significant hospital cost reductions while maintaining or improving quality.

Ms. Miller came to Nexera with more than 20 years of services as a hospital administrator responsible for a variety of operational areas including hospital strategic planning, physician recruitment and marketing, hospital new business development and supporting hospital trustees. She has also held various clinical and managerial positions in psychiatric hospitals and residential treatment centers, specializing in adolescent and family treatment. 

Ms. Miller has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Tulane University, a Masters of Psychology from Ball State University, and a Masters of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration from Mt. Sinai Medical School and Bernard Baruch College. She is also a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and served as Treasurer of the Greater New York chapter of The Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management (AHRMM) during which time they won Chapter of the Year. Ms. Miller is also a nationally recognized presenter, speaking about physician preference item management and the importance of inventory management.

Elliot Allen, MBA, Vice President, Management Services

Mr. Elliot Allen is Vice President, Management Services for Nexera. He has more than 30 years of experience as a senior administrator ranging from materials management, purchasing, supply chain management, support services, and consulting. Over the past 10 years, he has been the practice leader for two consulting firms, leading outsource teams on projects with an average return on investment (ROI) of five times the investment amount.

Mr. Allen has also overseen the following areas in acute care hospitals and medical centers in the Greater New York metropolitan area—materials management (purchasing, receiving, distribution, mail room, messenger, linen/laundry, patient transport, staff, housing, central sterile supply), pharmacy, morgue, clinical engineering, and dietary.

Mr. Allen received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Economics, Finance and Political Science from Queens College, The City University of New York. He received his Masters of Business Administration in Healthcare Administration from Adelphi University.

Roberta Knab, Vice President, Management Services

Ms. Roberta Knab is Vice President of Management Services for Nexera where she oversees a variety of clients.

Ms. Knab is a healthcare professional with over 16 years experience supervising initiatives for supply chain operations, including materials management and purchasing, strategic sourcing and contracting, cost reduction through operating and strategic improvement, value analysis, and vendor management. Her expertise has helped a number of hospitals significantly reduce supply costs and enhance overall performance.

With more than 12 years of consulting and technology experience, she has led teams on large-scale projects for Fortune 500 companies, ensuring successful results by maximizing resources and project budgets in order to achieve customer goals.

Ms. Knab received a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Carlos A. Maceda, MBA, FACHE, Vice President, Management Services

Mr. Carlos A. Maceda is Vice President, Management Services for Nexera and is responsible for the oversight of several Management Services clients.

Mr. Maceda is an experienced healthcare management professional with over 20 years of supply chain management experience. He began his career managing inventory in the U.S. Military as an Inventory Specialist and has worked at Henry Schein Corporation as an Implementation Manager. He also worked at several healthcare institutions as Director of Materials Management. Most recently, Mr. Maceda worked for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where he served as Director of Support Services, and was responsible for materials management, OR materials management, central sterile processing, in-house laundry services, environmental services, and patient transport. Among other successes, he saved over $10 million in PPI, increased Press Ganey room scores by 25%, and instituted their Guest Services program.

Mr. Maceda is a graduate of Bloomfield College and received his Masters of Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a concentration in Healthcare Administration. He is also a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).

Diane Mongiello, RN, CMRP, Vice President, Administrative Services

Ms. Diane Mongiello is an experienced registered nurse with extensive clinical and administrative experience, moving into the supply chain arena as director of materials management for a large integrated delivery network (IDN) in the Northeast. In 2003, Ms. Mongiello joined Nexera as Operations Manager, with responsibilities for oversight of the Operations Division, provision of clinical support and expertise in consulting engagements, staff education, and sales and marketing. She is currently the Vice President for Administrative Services for Nexera and her responsibilities include staff development and training, recruitment, policy development, and marketing.

Throughout her career, she has successfully taken on many new and challenging roles. She has published numerous articles on supply chain redesign and cost savings opportunities, and has presented at local and national conferences.

Ms. Mongiello received her RN license from Queens Hospital Center School of Nursing and is a Certified Materials & Resource Professional.

Bruce Vladeck, PhD, Senior Advisor

Dr. Bruce Vladeck is a Senior Advisor for Nexera. His long and varied career has included senior leadership roles in the public, non-profit, academic, and business communities. He is a widely recognized expert in healthcare policy and finance, Medicare, Medicaid, long term care, and healthcare for the homeless, and a much sought-after speaker and writer in all of those areas.

In the healthcare community, Dr. Vladeck is perhaps most widely known for his tenure as Administrator of the Healthcare Financing Administration (HCFA) from 1993–97, a period that encompassed Health Reform, the Contract with America Congress and budget stalemates, and the Balanced Budget Act. Dr. Vladeck’s time at HCFA was marked by significant innovation in statewide Medicaid programs through demonstration waivers; the development of Medicare prospective payment systems for hospital outpatient services, skilled nursing facilities, and home care agencies; implementation of the first quantitative quality measures for managed care plans; major initiatives to combat fraud and abuse; and significant improvements in beneficiary services. His work at HCFA was recognized in 1995 by a National Public Service Award. He remained closely involved in Medicare policy in 1998–99 as a Presidential Appointee to the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare.

After leaving HCFA, Dr. Vladeck spent six years at Mount Sinai Medical Center, as Professor of Health Policy and Geriatrics and Senior Vice President for Policy of the Medical Center. In that latter role, he successfully undertook a wide variety of administrative assignments, from managing the medical school’s affiliation with New York’s public hospital system to acting as interim chair of the Department of Geriatrics.

Dr. Vladeck joined Ernst & Young’s Health Sciences Advisory Services in 2004. He left that position for sixteen months in 2006–07 to serve, at the request of Governor Jon Corzine, as Interim President of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) after it had entered into a Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the U.S. Attorney. While at UMDNJ, Dr. Vladeck restored fiscal stability to the system, rebuilt its governance, compliance, and internal control processes, and laid the groundwork for restoration of full academic accreditation.

A graduate of Harvard College and the University of Michigan, Dr. Vladeck has held full-time faculty positions at Columbia University and Mount Sinai, and has served as adjunct faculty at Rutgers, Princeton, New York University, and the Aquinas Institute of Theology. He was previously President of the United Hospital Fund for ten years. Dr. Vladeck is currently a member of the Institute of Medicine and the New York Academy of Medicine, and serves on the board of the Medicare Rights Center, the March of Dimes, and the New York City Board of Health.
